Unit 2 Part 1 Test will cover slope, average rate of change, solving inequalities, and graphing inequalities.
Solving Multi-step Inequalities (The video below uses flash player and may not work on some devices.)
Unit 2 Vocabulary
- slope – change in the dependent variable divided by the change in the independent variable (aka average rate of change)
- increasing interval – domain values where the function goes uphill from left to right
- decreasing interval – domain values where the function goes downhill from left to right
- f(x) positive – the function is above the x-axis (y-values are positive)
- f(x) negative – the function is below the x-axis (y-values are negative)
- f(x) constant – the function remains the same (y-values stay the same) Horizontal line or line segment.
- positive slope – the function goes uphill from left to right
- negative slope – the function goes downhill from left to right
- zero slope – the function is a horizontal line or line segment
- slope-intercept form – y = mx + b where m is the slope and b is your y-intercept
- point-slope form – y = m(x – h) + k where (h,k) is a point and m is the slope [or y – y1 = m (x – x1) where (x1, y1) is a point on the line and m is the slope]
- standard form of a linear equation – Ax + By = C where A,B,C are integers and A must be positive
- translation – a vertical or horizontal shift
- horizontal translation – a shift to the left or right
- vertical translation – a shift up or down
- parallel lines – lines that are in the same plane and never intersect. Parallel lines have the same slope.
- perpendicular lines – lines that intersect in right angles. Perpendicular lines have opposite reciprocal slopes.
