Unit 1 Vocabulary
- Independent variable – the variable in a function with a value subject to choice
- Dependent variable – a variable whose value depends on the independent variable
- Function – a relation in which each element of the domain is paired with exactly one element of the range
- Function notation – a way to name a function that is defined by an equation. In function notation, y = 3x – 8 is written as f(x) = 3x – 8.
- Domain – the set of all values of the independent variable for which a function is defined
- Range – the set of all values of the dependent variable (There is another definition in statistics.)
- Vertical line test - a test used to see if a graph represents a function
- Coefficient - numerical factor of a variable. For 3x, 3 is the coefficient.
- Composition of functions - one function is composed with another function.
