Tips for doing well in math:
- Go to school every day, unless you are sick and contagious. Schedule appointments so that you don't miss class.
- Sign up for the Remind for your class.
- When you have to miss class, check with a friend or refer to the homepage of this website to see what you missed. Make-up work and assessments as quickly as possible. Most of the time, the later you wait the worse you do.
- Take notes (At least write down what you don't know. Abbreviate when possible in a way that you will understand it. Label them with date, section, topic, etc.)
- Reread your notes that afternoon, evening, and/or the next day.
- Read 1 section ahead in your textbook and/or watch a video for the next section in the textbook. (I have them on this site for many sections in the textbook.)
- Do your homework/classwork daily. Make note of anything that you are unsure of. Ask about it the next day.
- When we check homework in class, make corrections. Since I let you use homework/classwork on quizzes, they need to be correct or they aren't helpful.
- Ask questions in class. When you have a question, most of the time other students have the same question.
- Try problems on https://www.ixl.com/math/algebra-1 for extra practice. When you get a problem wrong, they give you a detailed explanation of how to solve it correctly. You can do 20 problems each day for free.
- Try extra odd problems from the textbook for extra practice. You can check your odd answers in the back of the textbook.
- Make use of the explanation videos on this site and on the texbook's companion website: http://connected.mcgraw-hill.com/ (password required) Email me and I can give you the access code to create an account.
- Find an A (or B) student in your class and become friends with them. Ask them if you can do homework and study together. Or you might be able to text or call them for help when you need it.
- Make flash cards for definitions that you don't know.
- Have your parents get the INow log-in and password from the school office. Check your grades weekly and make sure that you have completed all assignments.
- Go to my tutoring on Wednesdays from 2:35-3:35. Come prepared with questions on what you don't understand. Stay the whole time to get the most out of it.
- If necessary, hire a personal tutor.
